Some of our pieces, particularly rings, feature hand engraving, a time honored and precise technique.
Using carefully sharpened bits of steel called
gravers (like tiny chisels, but hand driven not hammered), the
goldsmith
carves intricate designs directly into the metal itself, usually
under a microscope for added detail. Tiny leaves, swirls, or flowers
are formed from the metal of the ring itself. Sometimes cupids
arrows or celtic knots are added to the sides to complete the
design. A beaded edge is added where appropriate with a milgrain
tool.
Hand engraving is most often used to give the piece a vintage, victorian appearance. When combined with handmade filagree, the look is very striking.
There are several different styles we are currently engraving, and pieces may featiure a combination of these styles, such as Leaf, Flower, Curls, Art Deco, Quatrefoil, Double Curls, Celtic Knots. We are also open to new ideas or patterns and are always growing and experimenting.
Very few jewelry artists have attained the skill level to perform fine hand engraving of this type, so we are proud to be able to feature it in our studio. We work these miniature miracles in Platinum, 14 Karat White Gold, and 18 and 14 Karat Yellow Gold.
